Democratic Representative Eric Swalwell resigns from Congress to fight false claims but take responsibility for past mistakes amid assault allegations.
WASHINGTON: Democratic Representative Eric Swalwell announced his resignation from Congress over allegations of sexual misconduct.
He posted his decision in a statement on X, stating he was suspending his campaign for California governor.
“I am deeply sorry to my family, staff, and constituents for mistakes in judgment I’ve made in my past,” Swalwell said.
He added he would fight a serious false allegation but must take responsibility for his own mistakes.
His troubles escalated rapidly over the weekend following reports in the San Francisco Chronicle and CNN.
The reports detailed allegations from four women, including a former staff member.
She alleged he sexually assaulted her twice while she was too intoxicated to consent.
