- Eileen Wang, the mayor of Arcadia, has agreed to plead guilty to acting as an illegal agent for the Chinese government and has resigned from her city position.
- Wang was charged in April with one count of acting in the United States as an illegal agent of a foreign government and was accused of doing the bidding of Chinese officials without prior notification to the U.S. government, as required by law.
- Her alleged activities, which ceased after she took office in December 2022, involved operating a news website aimed at the Chinese American community and sharing content favorable to Beijing.
- One instance included sharing an article that refuted claims of persecution and forced labour of Uyghurs in China's Xinjiang province.
- Wang faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in federal prison for the felony and is expected to formally plead guilty in the coming weeks.
