US military carries out new Iran strikes and reinstates Trump’s Strait of Hormuz blockade

  • U.S. forces carried out more strikes on Iran Tuesday to eliminate "emerging threats" and reinstated President Donald Trump’s blockade on Iranian ports.
  • U.S. Central Command said strikes were launched at around 3 p.m. ET to “continue degrading Iranian capabilities used to attack commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.” The strikes took place as American forces prepared to resume the naval blockade against Iranian ports and coastal areas at 4 p.m. ET.
  • Attacks from both sides have reignited after Iran targeted ships in the Strait of Hormuz last week. They’ve attacked ships moving through the strait on a route overseen by the U.S. military that is outside Tehran’s control, setting off tit-for-tat strikes.
  • The U.S. carried out a large wave of attacks on July 13 against coastal defense systems, missile and drone sites and maritime capabilities in locations across Iran, including Bushehr, Chah Bahar, Jask, Konarak, Abu Musa, and Bandar Abbas, the U.S. military said.
  • Also Tuesday, Trump reversed plans to charge ships for using the Strait of Hormuz, stating Gulf nations would instead invest in the United States.
