The US military said it had completed strikes against Iran in response to the downing of a US Army Apache helicopter.

The "self-defense" strikes were carried out at the direction of President Donald Trump, US Central Command (CENTCOM) said on X.

"CENTCOM forces struck Iranian air defense, ground control stations, and surveillance radar sites near the Strait of Hormuz with precision munitions from U.S. Air Force and Navy fighter jets," the post said.

According to US media reports, the attacks were carried out in three waves.

The military described the operation as a "proportional" response to Iran's downing of the Apache helicopter off the coast of Oman.

"U.S. forces remain vigilant and postured to defend against unjustified Iranian aggression," CENTCOM said.

Trump previously said Iran was responsible for the downing of the helicopter. "There were two pilots involved, both are safe and uninjured. Nevertheless, the United States must, of necessity, respond to this attack," he said.
