US Vice President J.D. Vance revealed that Donald Trump is weighing new tariffs on Chinese imports in response to Beijing’s purchases of Russian oil.

When asked whether Trump would impose similar tariffs on China, just as he has threatened for other countries like India over their Russian oil purchases, Vance said the idea is being considered.

“He’s still reviewing his options”

However, Vance said the US President has not yet decided on imposing tariffs on China, noting that Washington’s relationship with Beijing involves many factors unrelated to the Russia issue, Deccan Herald reported.

He added that Trump is still reviewing his options and will make the call when he’s ready.

“The President said he’s thinking about it, but hasn’t made any firm decisions. The China issue is a bit more complicated because our relationship with them affects many other things beyond the Russia situation,” Vance explained.

Trump slapped an extra 25% tariff on top of the existing 25%

The US first hit India with a 25% tariff, and was slapped with another 25% just last week over Delhi’s purchase of Russian oil, pushing the total to 50% (one of the highest rates the US has ever put on any country), which is set to take effect on August 27.

India called the move “unfair, unjustified, and unreasonable” and said it will do whatever it takes to protect its national interests.

“It’s really unfortunate that the US has decided to add these extra tariffs on India,” the External Affairs Ministry said.
