US President Donald Trump on Monday failed in his attempt to have a sexual abuse ruling against him reviewed by the Supreme Court.

The justices rejected a request seeking to challenge the verdict in the civil case brought by writer E Jean Carroll, according to court documents.

In 2023, a New York jury deemed it proven that Trump had attacked, sexually abused and later defamed Carroll in a prestigious New York department store in 1996. Trump was ordered to pay compensation totalling $5 million. Trump has consistently denied the allegations.

While the statute of limitations had expired for criminal charges, civil proceedings remained open.

The New York Times called the Supreme Court's decision a "major blow" to Trump and likely "the end of his legal efforts to contest the jury verdict."
