Vice President JD Vance has suggested that the agreements between the United States and Iran may extend beyond the terms of the deal that have been made public so far.
Speaking at a White House press briefing on Thursday, Vance referred to “gentlemen’s agreements” covering specific aspects of the negotiations, like Iran's uranium stockpiles.
Asked about such side deals, he said some had even been put in writing.
But whether specific commitments took the form of a memorandum, informal understandings or a future final agreement was of secondary importance, he said.
“It’s about verification,” the vice president said. The United States, he added, does not rely on words but on actions.
According to Vance, Iran has pledged to end uranium enrichment in the future and to grant international inspectors access to verify and dismantle existing stockpiles of highly enriched uranium.
If Tehran fulfils these commitments, the agreement provides for reciprocal concessions from the US, he said, without offering further details.
