Using the new MyKad for Budi95? Remember to flip it over at the pump

If you’re using the new-generation MyKad, there’s one small habit to change the next time you refuel. Because the chip on the new card sits on the back rather than the front, you now need to flip your MyKad over when inserting it into the reader at the petrol pump. Following its rollout, the National Registration Department (JPN) shared a reminder on how to insert the new card correctly, with the chip facing upwards.

As for why your MyKad is needed in the first place, both the Budi95 petrol subsidy and the Budi Diesel subsidy use it to verify your eligibility before applying the subsidised price. There’s no need to fill in a form or register separately, as eligible Malaysians are covered automatically, provided you have a valid MyKad with a working chip and a valid driving licence.

So how do you actually use it at a self-service pump? The steps are simple:

1. At the terminal, choose how much fuel you want and pay with your bank card or another supported method
2. Insert your MyKad into the card reader, and if it’s the new-generation card, flip it over first so that the chip is facing upwards
3. Wait as the terminal verifies your eligibility, with the screen showing your details, whether you qualify, and how much subsidised fuel you have left for the month
4. Follow the on-screen prompts and remove your MyKad when told to, then pump as usual

That said, the process may vary slightly depending on the petrol station. Some pumps have a built-in MyKad reader, while at others, you may need to hand your MyKad to the cashier for verification. At supported stations, you can also skip using the physical card altogether by verifying your eligibility through linked apps such as Setel, Touch ‘n Go eWallet or the Shell app.
