KUALA LUMPUR – The victim of this morning’s explosion at HELP University in Bukit Damansara has been identified as a 24-year-old student Soo Yu Juan from Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR). He was undergoing industrial training when the incident occurred.

Professor Dr Chang Yoong Choon, Head of the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering at UTAR, confirmed that the student was in the final week of his three-month mechanical engineering industrial training.

“The victim was pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering and was about to complete his industrial training this week,” Dr Chang said during an interview at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital’s Forensic Department on Monday, as quoted by Sinar Harian.

Dr Chang expressed sympathy for the family, noting that UTAR provides insurance coverage for all its students, including for accidents leading to injuries or death.

“The university will handle the necessary documentation and file claims with the insurance company. We will also support the family with funeral arrangements,” he added.

As previously reported, the explosion, believed to have occurred during air conditioning maintenance near the university’s cafeteria, led to one fatality and left nine others injured, including four students.

In response to the incident, Higher Education Ministry (MOHE) has instructed HELP University to carry out comprehensive safety inspections on its facilities. The university is required to ensure that all affected areas are cleared by authorities before being reopened and to provide medical and psychosocial support for the victims.

“The ministry reiterates its commitment to the safety and well-being of students and staff at all higher learning institutions, emphasising adherence to safety standards, routine maintenance, and collaboration with relevant agencies,” MOHE said in a statement.

AmanahRaya Real Estate Investment Trust (AmanahRaya REIT), which manages the university property, has appointed independent assessors to conduct a thorough evaluation.

“The canteen area affected by the explosion has been evacuated, and access remains restricted as a precautionary measure,” AmanahRaya REIT said in a statement. “We are fully cooperating with the authorities and offering support to HELP University during this difficult time. Further updates will be provided as more verified information becomes available.”

HELP University is one of the 12 properties managed by AmanahRaya REIT as of December 31, 2024. - January 12, 2026
