A Mohali court has sentenced a Muzaffarpur native, Rahul Kumar (20), to life imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 13,000 in a 2022 murder case of a Kurali resident.
In her complaint, Maya, a labourer and a native of UP, said on March 31, 2022, around 8 pm, her son Sonu (18) left home. His phone was found switched off around midnight. She waited for him for two days.
When he did not return, Maya got a missing person report lodged at the Kurali police station on April 2.
Maya came to know that her son was called by Rahul Kumar, a native Muzaffarpur (UP), who was living at Niholka village. She was informed that Rahul had allegedly murdered Sonu and disposed of his body. Rahul was arrested from a tubewell of one Baljit Singh, a resident of Niholka. In his disclosure statement before the investigating officer, Rahul said on March 31 around 8 pm, he called Sonu and took him to Niholka village, where they consumed liquor at the tubewell.
As Rahul had a monetary dispute with Sonu, he allegedly sexually abused the latter and killed him after gagging him.
Rahul kept the body in a room and locked it. The next day around 10 pm, Rahul put Sonu’s body in empty fertiliser bag and tied it behind a bicycle with a rope.
He threw the body, along with the bicycle, at a cremation ground at Chintgarh village. Sonu’s mobile phone, a pair of grey slippers, bicycle and rope were later recovered by the police.
