UUM assists in funeral arrangements for student killed in campus bus accident

UNIVERSITI Utara Malaysia (UUM) is providing full assistance to the family of Manarina Hasya Muhamad Karim, 22, a student who died following a tragic bus accident on campus, including managing her remains until the burial process is completed.

UUM Vice-Chancellor Datuk Mohd Foad Sakdan said the university would extend various forms of support to the victim’s family during this difficult time.

“The body is currently undergoing a post-mortem at the Forensic Department of Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital this morning. UUM will assist with the entire funeral process, including transporting the remains using the university’s hearse,” Sinar Harian cited him telling reporters today.

He added that the university will provide four types of assistance, in terms of a maximum RM30,000 student insurance compensation, RM1,500 in student funeral benefits, RM2,000 in bereavement support from Yayasan Perkasa Siswa, and full logistical support to return the remains to the family’s hometown.

Mohd Foad also confirmed that UUM is cooperating fully with the police, who are leading the investigation. He noted that the university has yet to receive the full accident report.

The late Manarina’s remains are expected to be returned to her family residence in Felda Chemplak, Labis, Johor for burial.

The fatal incident occurred on Saturday morning when Manarina was struck by a campus bus in front of a bus stop along Jalan Persiaran Perdana, UUM.

Kubang Pasu District Police Chief Mohd Radzi Abdul Rahim said the victim was confirmed dead at 6.30 pm while receiving treatment at Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital.

The accident, which happened around 8.45 am, reportedly involved two buses and is currently under investigation. - April 20, 2025
