Van with ten tourists on board plunges into ravine

BALIK PULAU - One person is believed to have been killed when a tour van filled with 10 Singaporean tourists plunged around six metres into a ravine on the elevated highway from Teluk Kumbar to Balik Pulau around 830pm tonight.

The mishap happened in the midst of a downpour.

As of 1030pm, a search and rescue team from the Balik Pulau district fire and rescue department managed to pull five passengers to safety while another five remained trapped in the van.

Medical attention is being administered at the scene.

The names and other details of the victim were unavailable as of now.

The rescue effort is believed to be hampered by rainfall and the location of the vehicle.

A traffic jam has also ensued due to the mishap, as the highway is the main one linking the northeast to the southwest districts of the island with many road users heading back after a weekend in George Town, some 25km away. - The Vibes, September 24, 2023
