At least 188 people have died in Venezuela in two back-to-back earthquakes, the president of the National Assembly, Jorge Rodríguez said on Thursday.
A further 1,520 people have been injured, and more than 200 are trapped under the rubble.
The brother of Acting President Delcy Rodríguez put the number of buildings that had completely collapsed or been damaged at around 250.
Delcy Rodríguez travelled to the hard-hit city of La Guaira, near the epicentre of the two main quakes, which measured 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude.
Almost 3,000 families have been affected by the disaster, said Rodríguez. Officially, 157 people have been reported missing.
The damage was particularly widespread in the state of La Guaira on the Caribbean coast. Buildings also collapsed in the capital, Caracas, and in other regions, according to officials.
There have been 138 aftershocks since the quakes which struck on Wednesday at around 6:04 pm (2204 GMT), about 170 kilometres west of Caracas, according to US Geological Survey (USGS) data.
