Venezuelan resident films terrifying high-rise escape as building crumbles after earthquake

A resident in Venezuela filmed a terrifying escape from a high-rise building after a double earthquake hit the country on Wednesday (24 June).

Footage circulated on social media on Wednesday shows the individual running down a stairwell, with debris on the floor and cracks showing in the building walls.

A 7.2-magnitude earthquake hit about 160 km (100 miles) west of Caracas. A 7.5-magnitude tremor followed less than a minute later, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

The death toll has risen to 164, president Delcy Rodriguez has said.

The USGS used predictive modelling to estimate that the death toll would most likely run into the thousands, with a substantial probability of exceeding 10,000.
