A verdict is expected on Thursday at Austrian court in the trial over a foiled plot to attack a Taylor Swift concert in Vienna.

A 21-year-old defendant admitted planning an attack in August 2024 at Vienna’s Ernst Happel Stadium, the venue for the pop mega star's three performances during her Eras Tour.

Prosecutors say he intended to carry out a jihadist-inspired massacre of Swift fans using knives and a bomb.

The Austrian man was arrested a day before the first concert following a tip-off from a foreign intelligence service. All three concerts were subsequently cancelled.

Swift later described the events as "devastating" and said it had left her with "a new sense of fear."

Prosecutors at the same trial have also charged the man and a second defendant with various terrorism-related offences, including forming a terrorist cell, and accuse them of supporting a third Islamist in a planned attack on Saudi security forces in Mecca.

The main defendant, identified only as Beran A in line with Austrian privacy laws, faces up to 20 years in prison. He denies having any involvement in the attempted Mecca attack.

Closing arguments from the prosecution and defence are scheduled first, after which the eight jurors are expected to deliberate for several hours regarding the question of guilt.

A verdict in the trial that began on April 28 in Wiener Neustadt, some 50 kilometres south of Vienna, could come as early as Thursday afternoon.
