(UPDATED) VETERAN journalist and political columnist Philip Lustre Jr. was released from jail Saturday night after posting ₱48,000 bail in a cyber libel case from Davao City.
Lustre was arrested at Dapo Restaurant while attending the Saturday News Forum hosted by fellow journalists.
The Quezon City Police District said the journalist was arrested for violating Republic Act 10175, or the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012. The complaint against Lustre was filed before a Davao City court.
Lustre, author of the book “Kill, Kill, Kill,” about the bloody drug war of former president Rodrigo Duterte, said he was unaware of any case filed against him.
He said the charge was purely political harassment, noting that he suspects that it was initiated by the camp of Vice President Sara Duterte.
Dino de Leon, a lawyer and a guest at the forum, volunteered to be Lustre’s legal counsel. He said they would file for bail for Lustre’s release.
