VICTORIA International Container Terminal (VICT) has deployed four new Kalmar hybrid automatic container carriers (ACCs) following weeks of commissioning.
The fleet handover on May 26 supports VICT’s expansion program to boost annual capacity past 1.6 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) while strengthening landside capabilities, productivity, and loading times.
VICT CEO Bruno Porchietto noted the investment simultaneously scales terminal capacity and reduces environmental impact, while Kalmar head of Global Sales Karri Keskinen highlighted the project’s reliance on the companies’ longstanding cooperation.
“These new ACCs strengthen our landside capabilities while supporting our long-term sustainability goals. This investment reflects our commitment to expanding terminal capacity, improving efficiency and adopting technologies that lessen the environmental impact of our operations. We appreciate the successful partnership with Kalmar, which has enabled us to set a high standard of port operations in Australia,” said Porchietto.
Custom-engineered for operational efficiency, the carriers feature twin-box lifting capabilities of up to 60 tons to transfer containers between terminal stacks, vessels, and trucks. Their lithium-ion battery systems capture energy during operation, delivering 40 percent greater efficiency than standard diesel models and cutting annual carbon emissions by up to 50 tons per unit.
As the Southern Hemisphere’s only fully automated container terminal, VICT has partnered with Kalmar since launching Melbourne operations in 2017. This rollout marks the latest milestone in its strategy to meet global trade demands.
