Former UMNO Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin made a highly symbolic return to the party’s fold when he attended the UMNO Youth wing assembly at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur, marking his most prominent appearance at the party’s annual gathering since his expulsion in January 2023.
Khairy, who led UMNO Youth from 2009 to 2018, arrived at Dewan Merdeka following an official invitation from the current Youth chief, Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh. His presence immediately drew attention, as delegates and observers viewed the appearance as a significant political signal amid renewed discussions about leadership, unity, and direction within the party.
Dressed in a white Baju Melayu paired with a red sampin, Khairy walked alongside Dr Akmal as they entered the hall. Their arrival was accompanied by a traditional welcome featuring gendang beats and silat performances, creating a ceremonial atmosphere that underscored the importance of the moment. The warm reception contrasted sharply with Khairy’s removal from UMNO nearly three years earlier, following his public criticism of the party’s leadership.
Despite being expelled, Khairy has consistently maintained that his loyalty remains with UMNO. Since his departure, he has repeatedly stated that he has no intention of joining any other political party, reinforcing the perception that his political identity remains closely tied to UMNO’s history and future.
Dr Akmal later confirmed that the Youth wing had invited several former Youth leaders to attend the assembly, including Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz and Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki, who currently serves as UMNO’s secretary-general. The move was seen as an effort to reconnect the Youth wing with its past leadership and draw on their experience at a time when the party is seeking to rebuild support and cohesion.
Khairy’s appearance on January 15, 2026, was not his first return to the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur since his expulsion. In October 2025, he participated as a panellist in an education-focused programme organised by UMNO Youth, signalling a gradual re-engagement with party-linked platforms even without formal membership.
As a former Rembau Member of Parliament, Khairy previously held several senior Cabinet positions, including serving as health minister. His political career suffered a major setback following his defeat in the 2022 general election, after which his relationship with the party leadership deteriorated.
The Youth assembly was held alongside gatherings of UMNO’s Wanita and Puteri wings, all taking place on January 15 ahead of the main UMNO General Assembly scheduled for later in the week. Against the backdrop of leadership debates and speculation about future directions, Khairy’s return added a powerful symbolic layer to proceedings, intensifying talk about reconciliation and his possible role in UMNO’s next chapter.
