What began as a joyful outing by the Swat River in Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province took a devastating turn when sudden flash floods swept away nine members of an 18-person family group on Friday. The victims, mostly children, were caught off guard as rapidly rising waters turned a peaceful morning into a scene of tragedy.
A harrowing video circulating online showed the group stranded on rocks, encircled by fierce currents. According to local reports, some family members had ventured close to the river’s edge to play and take selfies when the water levels suddenly surged.
Witnesses described how the outing started with breakfast near the water while the children played nearby. The atmosphere quickly shifted as floodwaters surged unexpectedly, sweeping several individuals away before help could arrive. One family member recalled that the group had no warning signs of incoming danger, as the water appeared calm at first.
Rescue 1122 officials confirmed that they received the first distress call around 8 a.m. but emphasized that those present were unaware of the incoming water relay — a fast-moving surge often caused by upstream rainfall or dam release. By the time rescue teams and police reached the site, four people had already disappeared into the torrent.
The search and rescue operation, involving 80 personnel, was launched across five different locations along the river. Despite the best efforts of emergency services, nine lives were lost. The group reportedly waited more than two hours for help to arrive, further amplifying the grief of those who survived.
In the aftermath, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed his condolences and described the incident as heartbreaking. In an official statement, he directed authorities to strengthen safety measures around rivers and streams, especially during the monsoon season.
The tragedy has reignited concerns about the lack of early warning systems and signage near recreational areas that pose flood risks. Seasonal flooding is not uncommon in parts of northern Pakistan, and such incidents underscore the need for greater public awareness and infrastructure support to prevent similar losses in the future.
As the families of the victims mourn their loved ones, calls for better safety protocols and quicker emergency response continue to grow across the region.
