Vietnam Registered Foreign Investment Rises 55% to $40.63 Billion

HANOI - Vietnam’s registered foreign investment reached $40.63 billion in the first eight months of 2026, up 55.4% from a year earlier.

The total, calculated through Aug. 31, covers newly registered capital, increases to existing projects, and foreign investors’ capital contributions and share purchases, according to figures reported by Vietnam’s National Statistics Office. The comparable total was $26.14 billion in the first eight months of 2025.

Foreign direct investment actually disbursed in Vietnam was estimated at $17.25 billion during January-August, 12% higher than a year earlier and the highest eight-month level in five years.

Processing and manufacturing accounted for $14.24 billion, or 82.6% of realized investment, while real estate received $1.29 billion and the energy sector $622.9 million.

Newly licensed projects accounted for $21.72 billion of registered investment. Vietnam approved 2,771 new foreign-invested projects during the period, 9.4% more than a year earlier, while their registered capital rose 96.8%.

Processing and manufacturing attracted $12.15 billion, or 55.9%, of newly registered capital. Electricity, gas, water supply and air-conditioning production and distribution ranked second with $3.13 billion, representing 14.4%.

Singapore was the largest source of newly registered investment among 73 countries and territories, with $7.62 billion, or 35.1% of the total. South Korea followed with $5.67 billion, while Hong Kong, mainland China and Japan registered $2.96 billion, $1.93 billion and $1.42 billion respectively.

Existing foreign-invested projects registered another $12.21 billion in additional capital, while capital contributions and share purchases were worth $6.7 billion. Together with newly registered capital, the three components brought total registered foreign investment to $40.63 billion.

For the remaining months of 2026, the Foreign Investment Agency said priorities include accelerating investment disbursement and strengthening links between foreign-invested and domestic companies.
