A Vietnamese man was fined 4 million Vietnamese Dong (RM647) for making a joke about carrying a bomb after taking a Malaysian Airlines flight from Kuala Lumpur to the Noi Bai International Airport in Hanoi at 12:45pm on Sunday (June 22).

The Noi Bai International Airport took to their Facebook page to explain how this all started. As passengers of the plane, which had just landed in Hanoi, were deplaning, a flight attendant casually asked what the man was carrying in a black carry-on box case.

He then said, “bomb,” intending to make a joke.

“With just one word, the entire security system was activated,” they said.

The entire security system

The passenger was asked to cooperate as his person as well as his luggage were checked.

“Units such as border police, aviation security, airport police, staff from the Noi Bai International Airport Emergency Command Centre and representatives of Malaysia Airlines and VIAGS (Vietnam Airport Ground Services Company Limited) all participated in handling the case,” they explained.

The man’s black box case held a keyboard and mouse, and he ultimately admitted that he made the joke due to a “lack of knowledge”. A report was made, and he was given a fine of 4 million Vietnamese Dong (RM647).

Just don’t do it

The airport ended the post by urging people to never joke about such things, as it could trigger security protocols, including the activation of emergency response procedures and the potential damage and disruption of flights.

“Do not joke about bombs, weapons or terrorism in any situation while at an airport or on a plane. Cooperate with the airline staff when checked. Remind relatives, especially children, not to joke about sensitive content. Fly safely, civilly and responsibly,” they added.
