On Saturday, Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar formally appointed Vijay as the Chief Minister-designate.

IN a landmark moment for Indian politics, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) president C. Joseph Vijay was officially sworn in as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu today.

His ascension marks a historic departure from the state’s traditional political landscape, effectively ending nearly sixty years of alternating power between the two long-standing Dravidian giants, the DMK and the AIADMK.

On Saturday, Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar formally appointed Vijay as the Chief Minister-designate.

This followed a period of intense political negotiations in which the TVK leader successfully consolidated a majority, securing the backing of 120 MLAs-elect within the 234-member Legislative Assembly.

The swearing-in ceremony took place at 10am at the Nehru Stadium in Chennai.

Alongside the new Chief Minister, nine other ministers, including several veteran TVK figures, took their oaths of office.

Vijay will lead a coalition administration that includes the Congress party as a key partner.
