
Kota Kinabalu:Some 147 pupils and over 300 villagers in Kg Miruru benefited from a Rotary Kota Kinabalu outreach mission (pic) led by President Carlwin Yee.
The club carries out two Socio-Medical Outreach to the remote areas in Sabah each year. It completed one in Kampung Pagalungan, Nabawan, last April.
The programme includes health checks from eyesight, glucose levels, blood pressure readings, dental checks with extractions and BMI readings.
Rotarian Datuk Dr Ganesh together with four other medical officers completed 104 medical check-ups with 16 patients with various illnesses being referred immediately to Hospital Ranau.
Rotarian Lie Kien Yueng (Optometrist) conducted 90 eye check-ups and gave out 72 reading glasses for those with far-sightedness. Five Dental Officers from Klinik Kesihatan Paginatan and Ranau performed 65 dental inspections and completed 50 tooth extractions.
Deworming tablets were taken by 180 children and teenagers. Campaigns were conducted at the same time for blood donations, organ donations, and dental health awareness targeted for children in the village in order to improve dental health and encourage good hygiene practices.
Those involved were 15 Rotarians from the Rotary Club of Kota Kinabalu South along with nine volunteers from Kota Kinabalu, two pharmacists, four Medical Officers, five dental staff, eight from the blood donation campaign team, three from the organ donation campaign team including 21 volunteers from Hospital Ranau and Klinik Kesihatan Paginatan.
Over 590 sets of new school uniforms, 173 new school shoes and 150 stationary sets sponsored by St James Primary School were given out to the primary students.
