A disturbing incident of violence unfolded in late 2019 when a married man, unable to accept the end of his affair with a former flame, brutally attacked her in a fit of rage. The horrifying assault, which left the victim permanently scarred, serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers of obsessive relationships and the devastating consequences of unresolved emotional conflicts.
The assailant, Chong Shiong Hui, 45, had rekindled a romantic relationship with Joey Lee, 43, after their brief affair 20 years earlier. The two reconnected in 2017, despite both being married to other people, and began an affair that continued until late 2019. In August of that year, Lee decided to end the relationship, sending Chong a message on November 28 informing him that she wanted to take a break. This message triggered an escalating series of threatening communications from Chong, who sent Lee multiple messages threatening harm to her, her husband, and her young daughter.
On the morning of November 30, 2019, Chong's threats turned into action. He armed himself with a chopper, a knife, and a pair of gloves, drove to Lee’s apartment, and attempted to gain her attention by turning off the main electrical switch outside her flat. When his actions went unnoticed, he returned to his car to drink some alcohol and waited. He later sent more threatening messages, escalating his words by saying he wanted to "see blood."
Later that day, Lee, feeling uncertain about the situation, agreed to meet Chong at his parents' house, hoping to resolve the conflict calmly. However, once there, Chong locked the gate behind her, then viciously attacked Lee with the chopper, slashing her forearms, head, and thigh. Despite her attempts to flee, Chong’s violence escalated as he grabbed a kitchen knife, slashing her back and the back of her head.
During the struggle, Lee was able to break free when Chong's parents returned home, giving her an opportunity to escape. However, Chong chased her down the street, continuing to attack her. Lee screamed for help, and neighbors immediately intervened, calling the police. Chong was eventually restrained by his mother, and Lee was rushed to the hospital with severe injuries, including skull fractures and deep cuts to her head and torso.
The assault was witnessed by Chong’s parents and neighbors, making it even more disturbing. Lee survived the ordeal but will carry permanent scars for the rest of her life, both physically and emotionally. The attack highlighted the extreme consequences of jealousy and obsessive behavior in relationships.
Chong was arrested, pleaded guilty this year and charged with attempted murder, along with two lesser charges for criminal mischief. Prosecutors have recommended a sentence of 16 to 18 years in prison, with additional corporal punishment, while the defense is seeking a lesser sentence of no more than 10 years. Sentencing is adjourned to December 6 this year.
This shocking incident underscores the importance of recognizing unhealthy relationships and emotional distress before they escalate into violence. It also highlights the need for open communication, support systems, and intervention to prevent further harm. Lee's story is a powerful reminder of the dangers that can arise when relationships spiral out of control and the lasting impact of violent actions on victims and their communities.
