KUALA LUMPUR: A forum speech by Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki at the World Trade Centre (WTC) here was briefly disrupted by a commotion believed to have been caused by three men on Tuesday.
The incident occurred at about 2.45pm when two men, who had been seated, suddenly approached Azam while holding banners.
According to Sinar Harian, the atmosphere in the hall became tense when one of the individuals began shouting and attempted to rush towards the stage.
He was, however, restrained by auxiliary police personnel and MACC personnel at the venue before being escorted out.
Another man, believed to be associated with the individuals involved, was also seen questioning the actions of the personnel while holding a banner expressing dissatisfaction with Azam.
Despite the disruption, Azam remained composed and continued his speech until its conclusion.
He even lightened the mood with a spontaneous remark.
“Don’t change your TV channel,” he quipped calmly before resuming his address.
Members of the media at the scene observed that the two individuals were wearing T-shirts bearing the word “Mandiri”.
The forum, which began at 2pm, was organised by the MACC in collaboration with a private university and the WTC.
The programme aimed, among other things, to share the MACC’s experiences and insights on institutional transformation, as well as to emphasise the role of education and prevention as forward-looking strategies in combating corruption.
It also sought to discuss the role of education in shaping a generation with integrity and fostering social responsibility in addressing corruption and abuse of power.
Among those present were Malaysian Employers Federation chief executive Datuk Seri Rosmamn Mohamed and Bentong MP Young Syefura Othman, who is also a member of the Parliamentary Special Committee on Corruption.
