Dining out today might burn a hole in your wallet but at what point do you draw the line? In this case, what do you think of RM75 for a plate of Ikan Siakap (Barramundi)?
A Malaysian customer recently shared on her TikTok post @kekyahfornour, a meal she she dubbed more expensive than dining in at KLCC & Pavilion. She dined in at a beach side restaurant while holidaying in Pangkor and ordered a fish weighing around 600 to 700 grams. To her, the fish tasted normal and she has had better ones.
The price of the seafood was not the only issue she had at the place.
“The chairs here are moldy and the service is not that good. We paid RM142 for our meal, and we had only plain water.”
Based on the short clip, she also ordered a plate of egg, Tom Yum soup, and prawns.
“Felt like I was eating in Switzerland. It’s not even this expensive in Singapore. I want to support local vendors but not with this price which is draining my blood.”
The incident took place at a restaurant on the Teluk Nipah Beach in Manjung, Perak, and the customer urged all Malaysians to be careful upon their visit.
“No price tags, no weighing scale!”
Never doubt the power of social media.
Not long after the video went viral with a massive 1 million views, officers from the Ministry of Domestic Trade & Living Costs (KPDN) visited the restaurant, and they had a lot to tell the restaurant operators.
“We observed the premise for 2 days. Not only that no price tags were displayed but the staff also don’t use weighing scale for the seafood in their transactions.”
According to the organisation’s TikTok post @kpdn_perak, the prices of the menu at the said restaurant were also significantly higher than others in the area.
The operators were given the Goods Information Confirmation Notice, where they are expected to submit all details regarding their goods to KPDN in 5 working days. If found guilty, they can be slapped with a fine of not more than RM100,000, or up to 3 years of jail time.
