A heart-wrenching video went viral on TikTok recently which shows an elderly Malaysian man going to a smartphone shop to try and sell his old Nokia phone.
The video, posted by TikTok user @asiah1106 nor Nor Asiah Kamis garnered over 2.1 million views and more than 137,000 likes in just 2 days.
In the video, the old man in his 50s can be seen talking in a Northern Peninsula Malaysia accent to a staff member at the shop, trying to sell off his old Nokia phone.
However, given the age of the phone, the female staff member said that they do not accept the device. She then asked why the elderly man was selling the phone.
The elderly man then said that he just needs RM20 for the phone because he has no money to purchase rice.
The video then continued in Part 2, which itself garnered over 1.1 million in just 1 day, where the female staff member rejected the trade-in but instead gave the elderly man RM300 with the intention of helping him.
Taken aback by the woman’s generosity, the elderly man then becomes emotional and wholeheartedly thanked her.

In the video’s comments section, many netizens were saddened at the plight of the elderly man and hoped that his fortunes would turn around.
However, as it turns out, the whole exchange was not actually real as it was just scripted content by Nor Asiah. The first video itself came with an ambiguous caption of “Sad content – Uncle comes to the shop to sell his old Nokia phone for rice”.
Furthermore, in a comment, she clarified that the whole thing was just an act to garner awareness, asserting,
“Thanks to all that showed their concern. This is just content for awareness. Just acting. All of you can channel your assistance to those that need it.”
Well, this just goes to show that Malaysians are a really caring society which is extremely concerned with those less fortunate.
