KUALA LUMPUR – Iran’s participation in the upcoming FIFA World Cup has been cast into doubt after its football federation failed to attend a key international meeting in Vancouver, highlighting mounting concerns over travel restrictions and diplomatic tensions.

The absence of Iranian representatives at the Asian football leadership gathering, chaired by FIFA president Gianni Infantino, raised questions, although the matter was not formally discussed during the session.

Tehran had previously maintained that the national team would compete “with pride” at the tournament, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada.

Asian Football Confederation (AFC) secretary-general Datuk Seri Windsor Paul John acknowledged that visa complications remain a key obstacle for Iranian officials, explaining their absence in Vancouver and raising uncertainty over their attendance at the upcoming FIFA Congress.

“It is unfortunate, but the issue is largely administrative and related to visa approvals,” he told Scoop when contacted.

“These processes can sometimes take longer than expected, particularly given the current geopolitical climate. We understand that efforts are ongoing on their side, and we remain hopeful that their delegation will be able to join us soon.

“At this stage, we are keeping communication channels open and working closely with all relevant parties. The expectation is that once the necessary clearances are obtained, they will be able to participate fully, including at the FIFA Congress.

“We will ensure that any formal matters involving Iran are addressed when they arrive.”

A report by The Athletic hinted that possible visa-related issues could prevent Iran from attending the FIFA Congress, underlining the scale of the challenge.

Iranian officials have previously faced similar difficulties, including delays in securing entry to Washington for the World Cup draw last December, pointing to a recurring problem.

The situation has been further complicated by heightened geopolitical tensions involving Iran, the United States and Israel in recent months.

In response, Iran had lobbied FIFA to relocate all of their group-stage matches to Mexico, but the request was rejected.

US President Donald Trump said Iran would be allowed to compete but questioned the suitability of their presence on security grounds.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio adopted a more measured tone, assuring security for players, support staff and their families, while indicating that entry for other personnel, including officials and media, could not be guaranteed.

Infantino reiterated football’s role in promoting unity, stressing the importance of global participation in a peaceful environment.

Iran have been drawn in Group G and are scheduled to face New Zealand on June 15 and Belgium on June 21 in Los Angeles, before meeting Egypt in Seattle on June 26. - April 29, 2026
