Deputy PM Ahmad Zahid says VM2026 tourism drive extended to 2027 to counter regional instability and shifting travel patterns

PUTRAJAYA: The national campaign to attract tourists, Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026), will be extended until the end of 2027. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi announced the decision following a meeting of the campaign’s main committee.

The extension is intended to allow for a more proactive promotional strategy. It aims to position Malaysia as a safe, stable, and competitive destination amid global challenges.

Ahmad Zahid, who chairs the VM2026 National Main Committee, said the Cabinet will consider and approve the decision. He cited the conflict in West Asia that began on February 28, 2026, as a significant factor impacting regional stability and global tourism.

The committee’s projections indicate tourist arrivals from West Asia could decline by 11% to 27%. This drop is equivalent to losing about 38 million passengers and USD56 billion in revenue.

“This has affected tourism hotspots in Asia and ASEAN,” Ahmad Zahid said in a statement. He added that the conflict has disrupted international flight routes and increased travel costs due to rising fuel prices.

The situation is also expected to reduce tourist confidence globally. The extended campaign is a national agenda to boost tourism revenue and strengthen the industry’s competitiveness.

It seeks to make tourism a primary contributor to the country’s Gross Domestic Product. The committee comprises six working groups led by several key ministries.

These include the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture and the Ministry of Communications. Other members are from various relevant government agencies.

“Each ministry and agency can present their programme achievements and planning activities in conjunction with the VM2026 campaign,” he said. The government remains committed to ensuring the campaign is implemented holistically and effectively.

“This effort aims to strengthen strategic cooperation, attract more visitors, increase the length of stay and tourist spending,” Ahmad Zahid stated. The goal is to highlight Malaysia as a premier holiday destination.
