I want to be genuinely enthusiastic about this. Malaysia is targeting 47 million international tourists and RM147.1 billion in tourism receipts under Visit Malaysia 2026, the most ambitious tourism campaign this country has ever run. The government has put more than RM500 million into the campaign. The official launch on January 3 featured PM Anwar Ibrahim and Oscar winner Tan Sri Michelle Yeoh at Bukit Bintang. Twenty-one new international flight routes have been added. Tourism Malaysia recorded 38.3 million arrivals by November 2025, which suggests 2025 was already a record-breaker before 2026 even began.
All of that is genuinely impressive. Malaysia is having a moment. Now here's the honest question: are we ready for what comes with 47 million people walking through our doors?
Because in September 2025, two tourists were physically assaulted by a tout at KLIA Terminal 2, one of them choked and slapped, and forced to pay RM836 for a ride quoted at RM60. In March 2026, a group of 13 Singaporean and Chinese visitors were charged RM902 for a steamed fish at a Genting Highlands restaurant and felt ambushed by pricing they weren't clearly told about upfront. Both incidents went internationally viral. Both made it onto Singapore media. Both damage the image that the RM500 million campaign is trying to build.
And then there's the structural stuff that doesn't go viral but matters just as much. Are there enough trained hospitality workers to handle a 24% increase in visitors over 2024's numbers? Are Malaysia's heritage sites, national parks, and tourist attractions resourced to manage the additional footfall? Is the public transport infrastructure between airports and city centres clean, reliable, and navigable for first-time visitors who don't speak Malay? Are food courts and tourist-facing businesses pricing transparently, with the KPDN enforcement to back it up?
The 47 million target is achievable. The 2024 result of 38 million already proved Malaysia has the appeal. What needs to match that appeal is the experience tourists have after they land. Because 47 million visitors don't just bring revenue. They also take home a story about Malaysia that they tell everyone they know. We need to make sure that story is a good one.
My Opinion
I've worked in digital and creative for over 25 years, and I know what brand reputation means. It's built in years and broken in seconds. The KLIA taxi incident and the Genting fish bill were both seconds. And both of those seconds have already been seen by millions of people in Singapore, China, and beyond who may have been considering Malaysia for their next trip. You can't spend your way back from a bad first impression. Fix the fundamentals first.
