Vocational College murder: 13 teens ordered to enter defence

TAWAU: The 13 students from the Lahad Datu Vocational College (KVLD), charged with murdering a biotech student, was ordered to enter their defence, Friday.

High Court Judge Datuk Duncan Sikodol made the order for the students, after ruling that the prosecution had established a prima facie case against the 13 students.

The 13 students, aged between 16 and 19, are accused of murdering one Mohamad Nazmie Aizzat Azwan, 17, at the KVLD between 9pm on March 21, 2024 and at 7.38am on March 22, 2024.

Read more They were charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code, read with Section 34 of the same Code, which carries the death sentence or life imprisonment, on conviction.

The prosecution had closed its case on Dec 9, 2024 after calling 25 witnesses during the hearing which took 12 days since its commencement on Nov 19, 2024.

Advertisement (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});The witnesses included the Director of KVLD, the college warden, the victim’s mother, a paramedic, a forensic pathologist, a chemical officer, four police officers and 13 student witnesses, comprising 10 minors and three others aged 19 and 20.

Eight of the 13 teenagers are represented by counsels Kamarudin, Datuk Ram and Chen Wen Jye, while the remaining five are each represented by counsel Abdul Ghani Zelika, including appointed counsel Vivian Thien, Jhesseny P Kang, Kusni Ambotuwo and Mohamed Zairi Zainal Abidin.

During the proceedings, the family members of the accused, who came from various districts in Sabah, were also present, including the victim’s mother Siti Hamidah Jumari, 45, who was accompanied by her younger brother.

The woman was also seen crying emotionally outside the courtroom while hugging DPP Nur Nisla, after the judge read the verdict.
