Porsche has a massive €700 million deficit and the only way Volkswagen Group thinks they can close it is with job cuts.

Internal restructuring pressures across the German automotive landscape are deepening as parent company Volkswagen Group prepares to push for even deeper workforce reductions at sports car manufacturer Porsche.

According to internal documents reviewed by Germany’s business daily Handelsblatt, Volkswagen Group’s supervisory board has recently sanctioned a restructuring framework that proposes cutting roughly 4,100 additional jobs at Porsche. The proposed headcount reduction aims to plug an estimated €700 million budget shortfall at the Stuttgart-based automaker.

The proposed cuts would be implemented outside and on top of existing labor settlements. In July 2026, Porsche’s executive leadership and worker representatives agreed to an additional reduction of 5,000 positions on top of an earlier baseline target of 4,000 jobs, locking in roughly 9,000 planned departures.

If this newly proposed tranche of 4,100 cuts is adopted, total staff reductions would surpass 13,000 positions, shrinking Porsche’s global headcount by more than one-fifth by 2035.

Corporate Friction: Recommendations Versus Direct Executive Authority

While Volkswagen Group controls the majority holding, it cannot unilaterally mandate staffing changes within Porsche’s operational ranks.

Under the existing corporate governance framework, the Wolfsburg parent board can only table formal layoff proposals and strategic restructuring advice to Porsche’s independent executive management and works council. Any binding implementation will require protracted negotiations between Porsche CEO Oliver Blume, executive leadership, and influential German trade union representatives who typically guard against forced redundancies.

The push for tighter headcounts highlights mounting friction across the wider automotive group as legacy German vehicle manufacturers scramble to trim structural overhead, counter weak sales momentum in key overseas markets like China, and weather elevated domestic production and energy costs.

Group Profit Forecast Slashed Following Impairments

The escalating cost pressures at Porsche have already delivered an immediate blow to the parent group’s fiscal outlook:

  • Slashed Operating Margins: Volkswagen Group recently downgraded its full-year operating profit margin forecast, dropping from an earlier expected band of 4.0% to 5.5% down to a ceiling of just 1.0%.
  • Porsche Asset Impairments: Executive management attributed the sudden downgrade directly to substantial asset impairments recognized within Porsche’s operations, alongside cooling global retail demand for high-end luxury electric vehicles.

As slowing demand for high-priced electric performance cars continues to pinch margins, the pressure from Wolfsburg signals that even the group’s historically most lucrative and protected crown jewel is no longer immune to severe corporate belt-tightening.
