BEAUFORT: The Sabah Department of Irrigation and Drainage (JPS) must ensure that all rivers, including tributaries, are cleared to prevent flooding.

Village Security and Development Committee (JKKK) Chairman of Kampung Gelila, Jibidi Wahid, said that clogged waterways forced residents to wade through flood waters.

AdvertisementHe added that the flooding even disrupted a wedding ceremony in the village, where all guests had to remove their shoes or sandals while crossing a bridge covered in weeds and debris.

“The river from Kuala Balik is overgrown with vegetation, and I have submitted a request for its cleaning since Dec 2023, but it has yet to be addressed. I have also met with the Deputy Engineer of JPS Beaufort Division several times,” he said.
