Wai Ching Ho, the Hong Kong-born actor best known for playing crime boss Madame Gao in Marvel’s Daredevil, Iron Fist, and The Defenders, has died aged 82.
News of Ho’s death was first shared publicly by her Daredevil co-star Peter Shinkoda, who played Nobu Yoshioka in the Netflix series.
Posting on Instagram on Saturday, he wrote: “Just lost someone very special to me. She was one of the coolest. Thinking aloud. #Gao.”
In a later post, Shinkoda shared several photographs of Ho and paid tribute to the actor, writing: “I won’t ever forget you. I learned every minute from you when we were together on and off set. I know wisdom – I’d hang on your every word. We will meet again, my friend. You were beautiful.”
Ho’s family confirmed her death in a statement shared with The Hollywood Reporter, which read: “Her family are deeply grateful for the incredible outpouring of love and support and the many beautiful messages and memories people have shared about our beloved Wai. Reading how much she meant to so many is comforting to us during this difficult time.”
The family did not share a cause of death.
However, actor Perry Yung wrote in a tribute posted on Instagram on Sunday, that Ho had “passed away peacefully after a stroke two days ago”.
Born in Hong Kong on 16 November 1943, Ho worked extensively in theatre as well as on screen, according to Deadline. Her recent stage credits included Celine Song's off-Broadway play Endlings in 2020, Frances Ya-Chu Cowhig’s Snow in Midsummer in 2022, and Laowang: A Chinatown King Lear in 2024.
Ho was introduced as the enigmatic Madame Gao in the first season of Daredevil in 2015. The character, one of the leaders of the criminal organisation the Hand, became a recurring presence in Marvel’s Netflix television universe and was reprised in Iron Fist and The Defenders.
Beyond the Marvel franchise, Ho built a career spanning more than three decades across film, television and theatre. Her screen credits included Premium Rush, Hustlers, Fresh Off the Boat, Awkwafina Is Nora from Queens, Only Murders in the Building, Orange Is the New Black, Law & Order: Criminal Intent, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Blue Bloods, and The Sorcerer's Apprentice.
She also voiced Grandma Wu in Pixar’s 2022 animated film Turning Red.
Yung, who played her husband in the 2018 drama High Resolution, wrote on Instagram that Ho was “a kind, compassionate human being whose work as an artist lifted every production to a higher standard, and we are better for it”.
Actor Mahira Kakkar, who appeared alongside Ho in the National Asian American Theatre Company's 2018 production of Henry VI, described her as “warm, funny, caring, joyful, positive and a truly wonderful actor”.
“For those of us who did not have a lot of role models and mentors in the industry Wai was a pillar,” Kakkar wrote. “I am deeply grateful I got to know her and I am very sad she is gone. She also utterly refused to speak ill of anyone. My dear Wai you deserve all the standing ovations – what a stellar human and a stellar artist. What an example of how to live.”
Writer and director Judy Lei also paid tribute on Instagram, recalling Ho's professionalism while filming The World’s Greatest. Lei wrote that after their original filming location fell through the night before production, Ho arrived at the replacement venue “all prepped and ready to play” and had even brought her own costume.
“She never displayed an ounce of disappointment in my lack of experience,” Lei wrote. “That type of grace is something I'll never forget.”
