Welcome to "Walkman & Chill", where I'll be rewinding to the 90s...

By far the greatest musical era in history.

(In my biased but objectively correct opinion.)

It's a series where I attempt to introduce younger listeners (and remind older ones) what music sounded like before autoplay existed.

Back when discovering a song actually required effort.

You either borrowed a cassette from a friend, sat by the radio with your finger hovering over the record button, or spent your entire monthly allowance on an album based solely on the fact that the cover art looked cool.

Why?

To spotlight songs that I feel defined a generation:

  • Real musicianship
  • Actual songwriting
  • And melodies that didn't need algorithms to work

Here's a banger about two dudes fighting over a girl.

Politely.

Well... sort of.

"If you... want to call me, baby... just go ahead now..."

It's not trying to change the world.

It's not making a political statement.

It's just unapologetically fun.

Slightly desperate.

But weirdly catchy.

It's also peak "I have absolutely no plan, but I love you anyway" energy.

Like showing up to a job interview with no qualifications, no experience, and hoping your personality somehow carries the day.

And honestly?

I respect that.

What I love most about songs like this is how alive they feel.

This was the sound of a band recording (most probably) in one take.

No click track.

No pitch correction.

No committee of producers.

Just musicians in a room trying to capture a feeling before it disappeared.

And somehow, the imperfections became part of the magic.

That's what made early 90s alt-rock beautiful.

It wasn't polished.

It wasn't over-produced.

It was raw, goofy, chaotic, and real.

Which, come to think of it, also describes most of us in the 90s.

So before we dive into the heavier ballads, heartbreak anthems, and moody bangers of the decade, here's a reminder that the 90s also knew how to have a good time.

What song kicks off YOUR 90s mixtape?

(And if you still have a Walkman lying around... you'd understand that skipping tracks used to be cardio)
