The Malaysian Parliament was abuzz with controversy as Tasek Gelugor Member of Parliament, Datuk Wan Saiful Wan Jan, disclosed allegations of being approached by Perikatan Nasional (PN) MPs acting as 'agents of persuasion.' Wan Saiful identified Gua Musang MP Mohd Azizi Abu Naim and Tanjong Karang MP Datuk Dr. Zulkafperi Hanapi, along with three others, as individuals who allegedly offered him various incentives to support the government.
Among the reported offers were promises of Parliament and project allocations totaling up to RM2 million, coverage of medical and legal expenses for his wife, and undisclosed tokens. Wan Saiful claimed that these offers were made by the Gua Musang MP and two others on January 17, with an additional person approaching him on February 26, introduced by the Tanjong Karang MP. Subsequently, the group proposed a speech for him to deliver at the Royal Decree on February 27.
In response, Wan Saiful urged the Dewan Rakyat to establish a committee to investigate the actions of the MPs involved, citing rule 80 (a) and Section 9 of the Parliamentary Council (Privileges and Powers) Act 1952. He called for decisive action against those attempting to influence his behavior and support within the Parliament.
This is not the first time Wan Saiful has raised concerns about alleged bribery attempts. On February 28, he claimed to have been offered a bribe to express support for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Following his disclosure, Wan Saiful stated that he was contacted by the Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) within an hour to report the alleged bribery attempt.
Furthermore, Wan Saiful expressed frustration over what he described as harassment by the MACC, claiming to have received notices that he felt unduly pressured him as a Member of Parliament.
The revelations by Wan Saiful have reignited discussions about integrity and ethical conduct within Malaysian politics. The call for a thorough investigation into these allegations reflects a commitment to upholding the principles of transparency and accountability within the Malaysian Parliament.
