Former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad challenged Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to hold a General Election (GE).
According to Berita Harian, Dr. Mahathir said that the GE was to prove that Anwar had the strong support of the people. Dr. Mahathir made the challenge when Anwar's leadership is now being accused of abusing power by investigating parties who are seen trying to challenge his leadership.
"I won five elections with a two-thirds majority. The people had a chance to change me, but it didn't happen.
He challenged Anwar to hold an election today, saying at a press conference, "If I abuse my position, I will hold an election."
Meanwhile, Anwar was perceived as being compelled to launch an inquiry into specific persons, according to Dr. Mahathir, as his appointment as prime minister was random and not chosen by the majority of the populace.
He claimed that Anwar was perceived as having failed to address social, political, and economic challenges during his whole term.
As a matter of fact, according to Dr. Mahathir, Anwar appears to be terrified of his own shadow, particularly in light of the rumors about the Dubai Step.
"Anwar showed that the Dubai Step wants to bring him down. He should have fallen. He is not good at finding others to overcome; he has corruption, but he lets go of corrupt people," he stated.
On December 30, Berita Harian published a report claiming that Datuk Ismail Yusop, the Deputy Director General (Community Communications) of the Department of Community Communication (J-KOM), had asserted that the Dubai Step originated during a recent vacation taken by leaders of Perikatan Nasional (PN), including party representatives in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
Claiming that the conference was called just to construct a 'through-the-roof' government, Hamzah said that specific responsibilities were assigned to 'officials' who are in charge of identifying Members of Parliament who may be bought off to assist the opposition.
He purportedly asserted that in addition to PN leaders, powerful, experienced politicians with the title of Tun were also involved in the opposition's plot, which included the purported use of "foreign sources" to topple Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's administration.
