The Faridabad police arrested a wanted criminal, Sandeep, alias Chenta, after a brief encounter late on Thursday night, the police said.

The accused allegedly fired three rounds at the police. In retaliatory firing, Sandeep was shot in the leg. He was injured and admitted to hospital for treatment.

A police spokesperson said the arrested accused, Sandeep, is a resident of Machhagar village. On Tuesday, he allegedly attempted to murder an employee of Chandila Food Hotel in Sector 12 by threatening him with a pistol.

The Crime Branch, Uncha village, had received information that the accused was planning to commit a crime. On Thursday night, the police surrounded him near Fajjupur village on the Chandpur-Atali road. The accused allegedly opened fire at the police team, which retaliated. One bullet hit him in the left leg, the police said.

“A motorcycle and a pistol recovered from the spot, and the accused was admitted to hospital. He has more than seven cases registered against him in Bhiwadi (Rajasthan), Karnal and Faridabad, including robbery, dacoity, attempted murder, assault and violations under the Arms Act. Further investigation is underway,” said Varun Dahiya, ACP Crime, Faridabad.
