In his seminal 1996 book The Clash of Civilizations and the Remaking of World Order, world renowned political scientist Samuel P. Huntington made a chilling prediction: that future global conflicts would no longer be driven by ideology or economics—but by civilizational identity.
He outlined eight major civilizations that he believed would dominate world affairs and increasingly come into conflict:
- Western Civilization
- Islamic Civilization
- Hindu Civilization
- Sinic (Chinese) Civilization
- Japanese Civilization
- Latin American Civilization
- Orthodox Civilization (centered around Russia)
- African Civilization
Huntington forecasted that the fault lines between these civilizations would become the primary sources of global conflict. He particularly warned of coming clashes between:
- Islam vs. the West
- China (Sinic) vs. the West
- Islam vs. Hindu India
- Russia (Orthodox) vs. the West
Fast forward to 2025, and the post-pandemic years have proven eerily consistent with Huntington’s thesis.
Russia vs the West: The Opening Salvo
The Russia-Ukraine War, which began in February 2022, marked the first major civilizational clash of the post-COVID era. With Russia representing the Orthodox world and Ukraine backed by the West, the conflict has become a long and bloody standoff testing Western resolve and unity.
Islam vs Hinduism: The Kashmir Flashpoint
Tensions between India and Pakistan—the core states of the Hindu and Islamic civilizations—nearly exploded into open warfare just last month over Kashmir. While full-scale war was narrowly avoided, the flashpoint remains volatile.
Islam vs the West: The Expanding Front
In October 2024, the long-simmering conflict between Israel and the Palestinians in Gaza reignited, but soon expanded into a broader confrontation involving Lebanon, Yemen, and Syria—all predominantly Islamic nations.
Israel might be located in Asia, but for all intent and purpose, it is a nation that should be rightfully categorized as belonging to the Western civilisation.
Now, Israel has launched direct strikes on Iran, and the possibility that the United States—the most powerful representative of Western civilization—will be drawn in looms ever closer.
Sinic Civilization: The Last to Join the Fray?
So far, the only major civilization Huntington predicted would clash with the West—but hasn’t yet in military terms—is the Sinic civilization, led by China.
Though U.S.–China tensions are at an all-time high, especially under the renewed leadership of Donald Trump—who returned to the White House in January 2025 and has since reignited tariff and trade wars—a direct military confrontation has not occurred.
But if the current global tempo of war continues—roughly one major conflict every two years since 2022—then China may enter the “arena” by 2027.
Rewriting the Global Order
The current world order was born in the ashes of World War II, and consolidated in the 1990s after the collapse of communism.
During that period, Western supremacy was unchallenged.
Today, however, America is weakened by internal divisions, and Western Europe has been unable to decisively check Russian aggression. This perceived weakness has emboldened other civilizations to rise up and contest the existing order.
Now, under Trump, the United States has returned to a posture of confrontation. With Iran in its crosshairs and China looming on the horizon, the clash of civilizations is no longer theoretical. It is unfolding in real time.
The Arena of War Awaits
In this emerging global contest, every civilization that wishes to lead must prove itself in the crucible of war.
- The West, Russia, and the Islamic world are already fighting.
- India came close last month.
- China is the last giant standing on the edge.
If history continues its march, China too may be drawn in—before 2027 ends.
As the world slips further into confrontation, the stakes grow ever higher. A new world order is coming. But the cost, as Huntington foresaw, may be immense.
The war of the world is before us—and it is unlikely that all of us will survive.
