Alleging that Punjab is facing an alarming rise in drug abuse, violent crime and lawlessness, leaders of Akali Dal (Waris Punjab De) on Friday accused successive governments of pushing the state into a deep crisis and failing to protect its youth from the growing drug menace.
The remarks were made during a gathering organised by the party in the Amritsar South constituency under the leadership of Sarpanch Baljit Singh Chatiwind.
Addressing the gathering, Balwinder Kaur, mother of jailed Khadoor Sahib MP Amritpal Singh, alleged that Punjab was passing through a difficult phase where law and order had deteriorated significantly.
She claimed that incidents of murder, robbery, gang warfare, extortion and other crimes were increasing, creating an atmosphere of fear among the public.
She added that the biggest challenge before Punjab was the rapid spread of drug addiction. “The younger generation is being trapped in drugs, destroying countless families. Unless drug trafficking and the sale of narcotics are curbed with a firm hand, Punjab’s future will remain at serious risk,” she said.
Calling upon people to play a greater social and moral role, Kaur urged the youth to stay away from drugs, follow the teachings of the Sikh Gurus and unite to safeguard Punjab’s interests.
