King Harald, who was Europe’s oldest monarch and Norway’s ceremonial head of state since 1991, died at the age of 80, the Royal Palace announced on Friday (28 August).
The monarch, who had been on sick leave for several weeks, passed away peacefully at Oslo Hospital at 6.35am local time on Friday, the palace said on its website.
His son, the Crown Prince Haakon, became Norway’s new king on Friday after the death of his father.
