Have you ever been to a shop to buy something based on a price sign only to be told that the price only applies to certain items? Did you know that such signs could be interpreted as misleading?
Recently, a video showing Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry enforcement officers in Melaka inspecting a roadside fruit stall with a misleading sign has gone viral.
The video posted on the ministry’s Melaka branch TikTok account showed a bright yellow sign stating “5kg for RM20” without specifying that the offer applied only to rambutan and dokong.
After being asked by the enforcement officer, the fruit seller explained that the duku sold at the stall was priced at RM30 for 5kg.
The officers could then be seen firmly explaining how the signage was misleading and could lead to misunderstandings before forcing stall workers to clarify the signage.
Netizens took to the comments section to share their experiences with misleading signs at roadside stalls.
Some netizens praised the enforcement officers for producing such informative content. Others shared similar experiences of getting tricked by signages.
“Also when it comes to durian, from afar it said one kilo RM5 but when you come nearer it says tempoyak.”
Meanwhile, netizens of different states urged the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry of other states to also make similar content to stop customers from getting tricked by these roadside sellers.
