Watch midterm election results in full: Trump’s Republican Party loses control of US Congress

Watch back the dramatic results from the crucial midterm elections on Wednesday (4 November), after the Democrats won back full control of Congress.

All 435 seats in the House of Representatives were up for election, along with 35 seats in the 100-member Senate.

With the majority of preliminary results declared, Democrats have met high expectations, winning the Senate after a series of victories in former Republican strongholds, including Texas, Kansas, South Carolina, Ohio, Maine and Iowa. Their series of major wins were dubbed a “Blue Tsunami”.

The party has also regained control of the House of Representatives, which they last held in 2023, having flipped numerous seats in states including Kentucky, New Jersey, Indiana and North Carolina.

Trump’s initial response to what is turning out to be a disastrous night for the Republicans was to blame the candidates themselves, before posting a picture of a MAGA-style red hat with “VETO” written on it.

Speaking by phone to Fox News, the president deflected blame for his party’s losses onto lackluster Republican candidates, some of whom lost even in GOP strongholds such as Texas and South Carolina.

In one of several significant upset wins, Democrat James Talarico won his Texas senate race by defeating Trump-backed attorney general Ken Paxton and breaking the party’s 38 year losing streak in the Lone Star state.

Democrat Abdul El-Sayed took aim at Trump and JD Vance following his victory in Michigan’s open US Senate race. He made history as the first Muslim elected to the US Senate.
