According to Section 75 of the Road Transport Act 1987, jaywalking is illegal in Malaysia should it occur within 100m of a designated pedestrian crossing or bridge.
But often times, this law is widely ignored.
For example, a woman straight up ran into a motorcyclist as she was jaywalked across the road in the middle of KL, as showcased in a video shared by the 我们是马来西亚人 We are Malaysians Facebook page.
They wrote, “Don’t play play.”
In the video, the woman can be seen running across the road without so much as checking to see if there are oncoming vehicles. She then ran straight into a food delivery rider, who then stopped by the road side looking stunned.
The woman quickly composed herself and apologised to the delivery rider before walking away.
What makes this entire situation avoidable was the fact that there was an LRT station right above them, which also doubles as a pedestrian bridge.
Many have since condemned the woman for jaywalking, creating a dangerous situation not just for her but for other road users.
“People like this are the cause of accidents. There’s a bridge but don’t want to use it. Do you understand that taking a minute to use the bridge can save a life?”
“There’s a bridge, use it la. Stupid.”
“There’s a bridge but don’t want to use it, want to get hit instead.”
