Facebook, launched in year 2004, has accompanied each and every one of us through ups and downs, for almost 20 years till today. Although it has been slightly unpopular among the current generation Alpha, it still is the Gen Y and Gen Zs' best friend, or even the Gen Xs' friend as well, used to watch reels, videos, and some updated news.

However, it's no longer safe like it was back then, even though there are multiple security updates, such as two-factor authentication. A young Malaysian woman posted on Facebook a few days ago sharing her scam experience. According to her, she was watching a movie commentary video on Facebook. As she was very eager to watch the next episode of it, she quickly clicked a link posted in the comment section without thinking.

Nevertheless, she managed to find out that there was something suspicious in the link, and immediately exited. Unfortunately, scammers were faster than expected. Her Maybank account was hacked instantly, and a total of RM877 was transferred out from her bank account 5 times, causing a total loss of RM4,385, leaving only RM1.49 left in her bank account.

She felt helpless as she needs the money very much for her kids, as it's her allocation for her child's kindergarten fees, daily expenses, rent and etc. She didn't expect that watching videos on Facebook aren't safe anymore, hence she intends to raise awareness to the community by sharing her own experience.  She even asked netizens if she could get her money back. She mentioned in the comments section that she has contacted Maybank to lodge a report. Hope she is able to get the money back.

How to avoid scams?

The best way to avoid scams is by avoiding clicking into unknown and unverified links, especially those that look suspicious. Also avoid unknown calls, and remember not to share any of your bank details including OTP, login details and etc. Always block unwanted calls or messages, and do not open suspicious texts, pop-up windows or click on links or attachments in emails or on any social media platform.
