Waves destroy two houses, nine fall into sea in Sandakan

SANDAKAN: Two stilt houses in Kampung Bokara, Jambatan 4, were severely damaged after being hit by large waves early Tuesday morning.

In the 6am incident, six adults and three children fell into the sea after the kitchen section of one of the houses collapsed, while another house sustained damage to its bedroom, which also collapsed.

All the victims were unhurt and rescued.

“We also provided initial aid to both families,” he said in a statement Wednesday.

George said his office had also contacted the Social Welfare Department to expedite the follow-up assistance process, especially with the coming Hari Raya Aidiladha celebration.

“We do not want any families to be neglected, especially with the festive season approaching. Any form of assistance that can be expedited, we will strive to provide,” he said.

He said both affected families had lodged police reports regarding the incident.

George also reminded villagers to stay alert, especially if their houses are old or in risky areas.
