Google sister company Waymo has suspended its robotaxi service in two US cities after two of its self-driving vehicles became stranded on flooded roads following heavy rainfall.
The company said operations in Atlanta, Georgia and San Antonio, Texas would remain paused until road conditions improve.
Waymo, a subsidiary of Google parent Alphabet, had already rolled out a software update for around 3,800 vehicles last week in an attempt to reduce such problems, but said further improvements were needed.
On Wednesday, a Waymo robotaxi without passengers drove into a flooded section of road in Atlanta and became stuck in the water. A similar incident had already occurred in San Antonio in April.
Waymo said it monitors weather alerts to assess road conditions, but the vehicle in Atlanta became stranded before any warning had been issued.
The company currently provides around 500,000 passenger rides per month and aims to rapidly expand the service to additional cities.
Waymo has also paused highway operations launched at the end of 2025 in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Phoenix and Miami.
The company said it wanted to improve the software's handling of certain types of construction zones before resuming highway rides "soon."
