Malaysian actress Mimi Lana has called for urgent action against alleged exploitation and trafficking within the local entertainment industry, warning that silence could allow abuse of power to continue unchecked. Her remarks followed disturbing revelations during a podcast appearance by actress Puteri Balqis and her mother, Norashikin Mohd Aziz, who recounted a traumatic episode from Balqis’s early years in show business.
The allegations trace back to a period when Balqis required medical treatment for an eye condition. According to Norashikin, what initially appeared to be a genuine offer of assistance soon took an alarming turn. She claimed that she was informed a well-connected political figure was willing to help, with the approach facilitated by a veteran figure from the entertainment industry who assured her that the support came with no conditions.
Her doubts reportedly intensified when she was instructed to enter a car alone, leaving her daughter behind. Norashikin alleged that she was taken to a private residence where several men were present, and where conditions tied to the supposed medical assistance were laid out. Among the claims was a demand that she marry one of the individuals involved, while her daughter would be sent overseas and kept away until adulthood.
Norashikin further alleged that her movements and interactions were tightly controlled during the encounter, describing an environment that left her fearful and isolated. She declined to recount certain details, citing emotional distress, but said the experience was deeply humiliating and frightening. Ultimately, she rejected the offer and returned to her daughter, choosing instead to seek medical help through other means.
Reacting to these claims, Mimi Lana expressed deep concern over what she described as an assault on a mother’s dignity and a betrayal of trust within an industry meant to nurture talent. She stressed that creative spaces should be safe environments, not places where vulnerable individuals are preyed upon due to their lack of influence or experience.
Mimi also urged the authorities, particularly the Royal Malaysia Police, to treat the allegations with the seriousness they deserve. She warned that complacency and public silence could enable repeat offences, allowing powerful figures to operate without fear of consequences. Drawing parallels to notorious international abuse scandals like that of Jeffrey Epstein, she cautioned that Malaysia must act decisively to ensure similar patterns are not allowed to take root locally.
The incident has reignited broader concerns about accountability, protection for minors, and safeguards for newcomers in Malaysia’s entertainment industry, with growing calls for transparent investigations and stronger institutional oversight.
