UMNO deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan (or better known as Mat Hasan) has rejected suggestions of internal discord within the party, disclosing that there have been repeated attempts by unnamed quarters to create tension between him and party president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
Speaking at the UMNO 80th anniversary convention at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur, Mohamad said such efforts had no impact on him, adding that he remains firmly committed to party unity and organisational discipline.
“Many are trying to drive a wedge between us, especially between me and Datuk Seri (Ahmad Zahid). It is not a small number, there are many, but I choose to remain loyal to the party and to support the president.
“Many have tried to create division, no matter what people say, I choose to close my ears, close my eyes, and open my heart and soul to remain with the party we are supporting,” he said.
Mat Hasan, who is also Foreign Minister, said he prioritises loyalty to UMNO above personal or political considerations, adding that he is prepared to relinquish his positions if it benefits the party.
He also warned against continued attempts to sow division within the organisation, stressing that unity remains essential for political stability in the country.
“Therefore, at this crucial moment, there must be no elements that seek to sow discord and pit us against one another,” he said.
“I am saying this in conjunction with my 70th birthday. I have nothing to lose. I am no longer talking about my career, but I want to give back to my party and I want to give back to my country,” he added.
Mat Hasan said UMNO continues to play a significant role in Malaysia’s political system despite no longer holding dominant power, describing the party as an important component in government formation and national stability.
“This proves that in Malaysian politics, Umno remains an essential complement and balance to national stability,” he said.
He added that UMNO is not merely a supporting force but continues to contribute to reform initiatives, economic development and public welfare, particularly through its representatives in government.
Reflecting on internal challenges since 2018, he said differences within the party had been managed responsibly, with continuity consistently prioritised over fragmentation.
“Differences were handled with wisdom, and the continuity of the party has always been prioritised,” he said.
He also defended UMNO’s role in government, saying its representatives bring valuable administrative experience to the current unity administration.
“This is because not many within the unity government possess as much experience in governing as Umno representatives,” he said.
He cautioned against attempts to undermine the party, suggesting that political attacks on UMNO had often backfired on their originators.
“In life, one must be careful with words. What goes around comes around,” he said.
Reiterating his commitment to party strengthening over factional politics, Mat Hasan expressed support for UMNO’s “Rumah Bangsa” initiative led by Zahid, which aims to broaden the party’s inclusivity.
The initiative seeks to welcome back former members, attract new supporters, and open participation to NGOs, academics, younger voters and Malays from diverse backgrounds.
“Those who have left, those who were sidelined and those who wish to return - we open the space for all,” he said.
“Anyone who identifies as Malay and wants to contribute to the struggle of the bangsa (race), we invite them to be part of our reform movement and political platform,” he added.
Mohamad concluded by reaffirming that his focus remains on serving the party and the nation, stating that personal advancement is no longer his priority. - May 2, 2026
