KUALA LUMPUR — The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) has assured the public that it will maintain safety during tomorrow’s planned peaceful assembly at Dataran Merdeka.
Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail, emphasised that PDRM, as a constitutional enforcer, respects the public’s right to peacefully assemble and express their views in line with Malaysia’s democratic values.
“PDRM is committed to facilitating this event to ensure it proceeds smoothly, safely, and with respect for shared public spaces,” he said in a press release today.
He urged all involved parties to cooperate to ensure a peaceful atmosphere during the gathering.
“Participants should adhere to the law and work together to maintain peace and security in the vicinity,” the IGP added.
Khalid also expressed hope that the assembly would reflect Malaysia's cultural values, calling for respectful discourse and civility.
For those not directly participating, he advised the public to plan their routes in advance and stay updated on traffic information, as disruptions to traffic flow are expected during the event.
PDRM remains steadfast in its commitment to upholding public safety while respecting citizens' constitutional rights.
“We believe that balancing democratic rights with law enforcement can be achieved through cooperation and shared responsibility,” the IGP concluded.
Yesterday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim directed the police to extend full support to ensure the smooth and peaceful conduct of the rally.
The Prime Minister’s Senior Press Secretary, Tunku Nashrul Abaidah, confirmed that Anwar has closely monitored the situation and urged that the event proceed in an orderly and peaceful manner, in accordance with constitutional principles and the spirit of reform.
“The Madani government firmly supports democracy. The right to express opposition, even to the government, is a cornerstone of a free and just society,” Tunku Nashrul said during a daily briefing at the Prime Minister's Office (PMO).
“Under the Prime Minister’s leadership, this space has not only been expanded but also respected,” he continued, noting that public demonstrations would not be suppressed arbitrarily.
"Disagreements with the government, including through peaceful protests, are part of a healthy democratic process, provided they comply with the law and do not compromise public safety," Tunku Nashrul added.
He concluded with a reminder that the government embraces tolerance and resilience in the face of criticism.
“We may plan, but Allah is the best of planners, and He determines the outcome,” Tunku Nashrul said.
Meanwhile, acting Kuala Lumpur Police Chief Datuk Mohamed Usuf Jan Mohamad revealed that the police had received 60 reports related to the rally, which is expected to draw between 10,000 and 15,000 participants. The event is being organised by a coalition of NGOs, university students, and members of the public. - July 25, 2025
